Austria's own Baden bei Wien is a city on the rise when it comes to spa tourism. Casually known as the Monte Carlo of Eastern Europe. Baden is a spa town in the Austrian state of Lower Austria and the capital of the Baden district. Don't be confused with Switzerland’s Baden or Germany’s Baden-Baden (both of which are also nice spa towns to visit) Located about 26 kilometres south of Vienna, frequently the name is given as Baden bei Wien (Baden near Vienna); this name, however, is not official, but can be used to distinguish it from other cities of the same name such as Baden-Baden or Baden, Switzerland. The municipality consists of the Katastralgemeinden Baden, Braiten, Gamingerhof, Leesdorf, Mitterberg, Rauhenstein and Weikersdor.
Baden offers a rich variety of baths and springs, parks and coffeehouses and has continued to be a retreat for Europe’s elite. It was the favourite summer residence of Beethoven, and he stayed there many times over the years. Mozart had also frequented the spa. The origin of Baden lies in the healing powers of the sulphur springs. On a trip here, keep your eyes open and you may be able to spot some celebrities on their holiday.
