Rishikesh - The Beatles and Yoga city
Rishikesh is a pilgrimage site on the banks of the Ganges in northern India. It is said that Lord Rama did penance in Rishikesh after slaying the demon king Ravana.
The Beatles spent some time here, Chaurasi Kutia during 1968 while writing the White Album. The Beatles visited Rishikesh in 1968. The band came to Rishikesh to partake in the Transcendental Meditation advanced training session. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram conducted this session. The band’s stay at the ashram was considered their most productive time. After the Beatles adopted the Maharishi as their guru, it was found that the Western world changed its opinion about Indian Spirituality, giving rise to Transcendental Meditation there.
A lot of graffiti, murals of band members and paintings done by visitors can be seen on the walls and façade of the ashram.
Rishikesh is known as the Yoga Capital of the World, and people journey there from all over the world to learn from the masters. There are many yoga and meditation schools to choose from, and lots of aspiring yoga teachers choose to earn their certification here.
