History buffs will strike gold traveling through Southwest Montana.
Visit Virginia City. This ghost town was Montana’s first capital and offers a firsthand look into the state’s mining past.
Pan for gold, sample homemade taffy at the old-fashioned sweets shop, or take a guided tour to learn all about the town’s colorful founders. During the summer, Virgnia City hosts a variety of festivals and re-enactments. It’s also home to the Virginia City Players, a theater group that puts on plays the whole family can enjoy.
Virginia City is on MT-287 S, about an hour and a half south of Butte, home to the World Museum of Mining. It's also a great place to stop on the route between Yellowstone and Glacier National Park! Check out this link for more information:
